After my consecutive breast cancer diagnosis and treatments, I certainly felt my weaknesses hailed in comparison to my strengths. I did not feel like myself, which was very concerning and heartbreaking. I went from being an energetic woman, glass half full and capable of finding the light at the end of the tunnel, to simply trying to make it through the day. I had physical pain, mental fog, and a lot of fear in “what ifs.” I did not let this derail my abilities to set clear goals, create a plan, and allow self-motivation to overturn those weaknesses into strengths. Movement and being energetic constitute a significant part of my identity. Competitive sports have always been a part of my life since grade school. As an adult, I enjoy participating in 5ks and 10ks throughout the year. Post-chemotherapy, acupuncture successfully managed my physical pain and gave me the desire and goal to be active again. I challenged myself to complete a 5k or 10k race each month for one year, a plan that would take discipline, adaptability, strength, and grace. In 12 months, I completed 12 races and covered 46.5 miles. What is stopping you from setting a goal and creating a plan?

My village is my firm foundation. When I can’t see beyond the moment, my circle reassures me that everything will be okay. They are who I turn to when I need guidance, a voice of reason, a shoulder to cry on, or even to laugh until I cry. It’s vital that the relationship is reciprocal and that I show up in a supportive manner. It was this village that aided me through every challenging journey I have had in my life, especially that of my breast cancer diagnosis, treatments, and life thereafter. My village was everything I needed when I honestly did not know if I would live as I battled through chemotherapy. I am forever grateful for my village, which surrounds and supports me in every way. Take Action and Stay Consistent

The path to crossing the finish line for my twelfth race required commitment and consistency in my training, self-care habits, and belief in myself to achieve my goal and plan. Even when I did not feel like it, I would prioritize getting at least 30 minutes of movement in for the day. In doing so, my body became accustomed to physically pushing beyond any mental roadblocks and also allowed me to envision myself achieving the goal. By moving most days and staying consistent in my physical goals, my body naturally embraced the ability to overcome any challenges.
